Tesla Motors Blocked in North Carolina

Tesla Motors is making headlines this week for being denied a dealership license in North Carolina. The all-electric automaker has one gallery store and two repair facilities in the state, but the DMV has decided that’s enough.

Tesla Motors will not be able to open a second gallery store in North Carolina. This comes following a hearing by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Essentially, the ruling by the North Carolina DMV is Tesla cannot own another store since there is an environment in the state, which would allow franchise dealerships to sell their vehicles. As reported on by Electrek citing AutoNews, “The North Carolina DMV, in an order signed by Administrative Hearing Officer Larry Greene, said there are at least three independent dealerships in the market that would be able to own and operate a Tesla dealership in a manner consistent with the public interest, meaning the exemption would not apply.”

Tesla appears to have lost this battle with the state government. This result comes after the EV automaker successfully overcame a 2013 North Carolina bill, which would have called for an outright ban on direct-to-consumer auto sales.
